Quality of work life? What quality?

Most people could use a transformation in the quality of work life.  There’s no question that the cultural conversation about work and around work more than hints at negativity.  Who wouldn’t rather spend a month, a week even on vacation than at work.  There are no doubt some people who would choose work every time, but most of are looking for ways to escape work because of the lack of quality of work life.

One concept that has come about in our culture over the last several decades is this notion of work/life balance.  I find this concept completely fascinating.  A balance between work and life?  I mean clearly we’re talking about a balance between life inside work and life outside of work, but is that the way it really occurs to us?  I think more it’s something like, “There’s my life and then there’s work.”  Utterly ridiculous!!!  Your work is your life whether you like it or not.  Yes, you may have one experience outside of work and one experience inside of work.  You may feel free outside and trapped inside of work.  Nevertheless, the experience you’re having at work is still your life which is why quality of work life is so important.

The great news, the message of the book, A Life Worth Living is you don’t have to put up with that paradigm any longer.  You don’t have to sell forty years of your life away just so you can live.  Despite how it feels, this isn’t it.  This isn’t all there is.  This is just the way of life we’ve inherited and you can change the quality of work life.  If you think that it’s not possible to invent another way to live, it’s only because you aren’t clear that we – humans – invented this one.  I can appreciate any cynicism that arises to “Rah, rah. We can create a new way of life” cheer that this sounds like, but this book’s purpose is not to get you so inspired that you just go out and magically transform the quality of work life.

You know how to do a great many things – drive a car, use a computer, solve math equations – but do you know how to transform the quality of work life and create a better life for yourself?  That’s the promise of this book.
